Employment Opportunities

Northern Community Planner

The Opportunity
Are you a planner looking to join a dynamic team that provides professional planning services to northern communities and the District? Northern Municipal Services, on behalf of the District as a northern municipality, is looking for a Northern Community Planner to support its evolving list of planning priorities. This position is based in La Ronge, SK. and would suit someone starting out in their community planning career with a sharp mind and pencil, or someone looking to get out of their current cubicle and apply their skill set across a wide range of projects. A remote work arrangement may be considered.

Advantages
  • An opportunity to travel and work with northern councils and administration to make sure their planning bylaws are not used as drink coasters or fire starter.
  • The great outdoors right at your doorstep in the La Ronge area: paddling, boating, fat biking, cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, northern lights, landscape photography, …the list goes on.
  • A competitive starting salary and a self-directed benefits package.
  • Training and professional development opportunities for career development and advancement.
  • Working with a knowledgeable, seasoned, and supportive planning team.

Responsibilities
  • As part of the planning unit’s long-standing Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw program, develop and update: official community plans and zoning bylaws, related land use bylaws, and capacity building and educational materials for the public and councils.
  • Carry out various municipal planning responsibilities for the District.
  • Develop work standards for projects and processes as they arise.
  • Liaise with other organizations or governments to gather information.
  • Logistical tasks such as file organization, database entry and meeting support.

Skill Set
  • Familiarity in applying The Planning and Development Act, 2007 and associated regulations. This would typically be gained through an urban planning or geography degree. Membership in the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute is an asset.
  • Experience drafting well-written and clear municipal documents for the public and councils.
  • At ease liaising with other agencies, staff, governments, and the public to obtain, exchange, coordinate or confirm information while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to work as One Team and contribute towards a positive work environment.
  • Strong aptitude to learn new software. Must be comfortable with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Experience with ESRI/GIS products is an asset.
  • Familiar with the challenges and opportunities facing northern Saskatchewan communities and an interest in northern community planning.

How to Apply
Please email a cover letter and resume by October 5, 2023, including references to Heather Bernardin, Senior Northern Planner, at heather.bernardin@gov.sk.ca. You will receive an email confirming receipt of your resume.

The District is an inclusive employer and invites applications from all qualified individuals. We thank all applicants in advance for their interest, however, only those selected for further consideration will be contacted. If you are unsuccessful, please accept our appreciation for your interest.
