Civic Addressing and 911- Emergency Preparedness

Can your address be easily seen from the road?
  • Can an ambulance find you in an emergency?
  • Does the delivery person know where to drop off your parcel?

Why is it necessary to have an addressing system?
The objective of civic addressing is to provide a simple and logical system for identifying the location of a property, person or a structure that is understandable by all user groups. It is used by government agencies, emergency services, utilities, service providers and more.

TIPS:

Be consistent (see examples):
  • Address numbers increase from South to North and from East to West.
  • Odd numbers are on the South and East side of the road and even numbers are on the North and West side of the road.
  • Streets travel North and South; Avenues travel East and West.

Civic Addressing Bylaw Template

The Emergency Planning Act requires every municipality to establish an emergency measures organization, appoint a coordinator, prepare an emergency measures plan and provide the first level of response for dealing with a local emergency or if an emergency exceeds a single municipality’s capacity, share resources from neighbouring municipalities.

The Emergency 911 System Act requires that municipalities participate in the development, implementation and operation of the Sask 911 system for their area in cooperation with the province, health districts, other emergency service providers and SaskTel.
