Jan Lake Playground
UPDATE June 24, 2024
The new climbing structure is now installed at the playground and ready to use! Thank you to the Jan Lake Playground committee for their hard work and providing the vision for this space for all to enjoy.
You may have noticed temporary stop signs have been installed near the playground along Lake Road. These signs were installed to address traffic speeds and other safety concerns that were expressed by property owners. The Jan Lake Community Association has a 25 kph speed limit sign that will be installed as you approach the site as well. A permanent solution is being discussed.
Have a safe and fun summer!

Have a safe and fun summer!
In 2022, property owners in Jan Lake brought forward a proposal to develop a playground for the community. Working with Northern Municipal Services, options for the playground site were considered and a municipal reserve parcel was selected. Municipal reserve lands are dedicated for uses such as recreation, public utilities or for other municipal purposes.
Playground Planning and Development
The first phase of development, ground preparation, was completed in the fall of 2022. To minimize tree removal, the development started in an area with existing windfall. Some select trees were removed for safety and to accommodate the playground layout.
In spring of 2023, the installation of play structures including a youth climbing structure, a slide and swings (see image below) from Northland Recreation Supply from Muenster, SK was completed .
“The Playground Phase 1 was a success by the excitement and smiles of the children last summer. Families and friends met new people and enjoyed the outdoor space. This winter even had children’s footsteps in the playground playing on the equipment.” (Jan Lake Playground committee)
Funding
Initial funding for the playground was provided by a Canada Community Building Fund federal grant of $63,000. An additional allocation of municipal funds of $40,000 followed to help with the project. The Jan Lake Playground committee (JLP) formed as a registered charity to focus on raising any additional funds, coordinating volunteers, and overseeing site preparation and construction of the playground.
Addition to the Playground
In 2024, the JLP committee proposed the addition of another climbing structure to serve older youth in the community.
With the proposed expansion, stakeholders including the Jan Lake Community Association and the JLP committee, decided it was important to develop a site plan for the playground to guide future development and provide setbacks from neighbouring properties and roads. There is bedrock on the site so future playground expansion may require the select removal of trees. The playground site plan including a future parking area is below.

Using remaining funds from 2023 and fundraising by the JLP committee, the equipment will be purchased and ground and site preparation will be started in the spring of 2024.
